For the patient who would rather not lie inside the tube (claustrophobic), the patient who finds the tube too confining (won't fit inside), or the patient who needs/wants to have a close friend or family member sit with them during the exam (a child, or anyone, for that matter), AMI offers a true Open-sided MRI in our new Silverdale Imaging Center.
This machine by Philips Medical Systems, is totally open on three sides, providing a view of the room (complete with a window) while resting comfortably on the padded table. The patient is given the option of listening to their choice of music in the room. The normal knocking sounds of an MRI are not as loud on the Open MRI. With just a push of a button, the technologist can be called at any time.
This machine can scan patients up to 500 pounds, depending on their specific body shape. It is wonderful for pediatric patients, or any patient, who would like to have a family member sit at their side, and even hold a hand, during the exam. For the claustrophobic patient, the dressing rooms are larger-than-usual, the exam room is spacious and comes with a window, and the open-sided design of the machine allows a view around you during the scan.
The Open MRI has been well-received by patients already. One patient wrote, "I am writing to thank you for the wonderful appointment I had yesterday. Your new open-sided MRI was great. I felt very comfortable. I usually have a hard time with anxiety when I have an MRI, but my experience this time was wonderful. I also wanted to thank the nurse [tech] who gave me the MRI. I felt she was exceptional. She was very pleasant. She took great care in giving me my shot. I usually end up with a lot of bruising and I didn't have any this time. Thanks again for my good experience." You are welcome-we are happy to have a machine available that is better-tolerated by some patients.
Nothing to eat or drink by mouth 6 hours prior to exam for MRI Abdomen and / or female pelvis. If you must take medications, call 360-377-6500 for instructions.
