
Pediatric Patients > Genitourninary Tract

If both genitourinary and gostrointestinal radiographic examinations are to be performed, genitourinary studies or sonography must be performed initially.
A. Intravenous Pyelogram:
(IVP, excretory urography). Contact AMI if patient less than 12 yrs. so that he can discuss case with referring physician (ultrasound may be more appropriate)
- 0-2 yrs. Nothing by mouth (NPO) 4 hours prior to examination. No solid foods on day of examination.
- 2-15 yrs. NPO 4 hours prior to examination. No solid foods on day of examination. Give magnesium citrate (<1 year, none; 1-3 yrs, 1.5 oz; 3 to 5 yrs, 2.5 oz; 6 to 8 yrs, 3 oz; 9 - 12 yrs, 4 oz; 12 - 18 yrs, 5 oz) the evening preceding the examination. If it does not result in a large bowel movement, cleansing enemas may be given at the radiology department.
- Note:
- Consult radiologist in patients with impaired renal function, suspected renal hypertension, or dehydration.
- No preparation in children with abdominal tumors, abdominal trauma, or acute abdominal problems.
