AMI Response to New Task Force Mammography Recommendations
After reviewing the new guidelines by the US Preventative Services Task Force, the radiologists at Advanced Medical Imaging Women's Diagnostic Center join with the American Cancer Society, the Society of Breast Surgeons, the American College of Radiology, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance in rejecting these recommendations. It is the position of AMI that "these recommendations are a step backward for women's health and will lead to more cancer deaths" according to Dr. Michael Cook, Medical Director at AMI.
AMI will continue to recommend the following:
- Starting at age 40 - baseline mammogram
- Age 40 for as a long as a woman is in good health - annual mammogram
- Clinical breast exam by your physician
- Breast self exam starting in your 20s
- Women at high risk should get a mammogram and MRI every year
In 2008, there were 49 women under age 50 diagnosed with breast cancer at our Women's Diagnostic Center, and now in treatment. If the new controversial guidelines were followed, these cancers would not have been detected when treatment options are many. Early detection offers the best chance for a cure.
